5 things you didn’t know about how Bowman can extend its range and maintain Comms On The Move over satellite

The British Military use the BOWMAN radio as their primary VHF line-of-sight radio communications system. Now, using Spectra Group’s SlingShot system and the L-TAC satellite service, BOWMAN can communicate over commercial satellite to enable British Forces to conduct Beyond Line of Sight Communications on the Move (BLOS COTM) in remote and dislocated areas.

Here are 5 things you may not know about SlingShot being used in this way:

1 – Radio range over 1000s km

Military line-of-sight VHF BOWMAN radios using Slingshot and the L-TAC satellite service can extend the range of tactical command and control communications from 30km to over 1,000s km in all weather, day or night.

2 – Situational Awareness

SlingShot also enables data transmission, supporting critical applications such as: situational awareness tools; GPS tracking; reporting and other data messaging, without the requirement for airborne repeaters or ground based line-of-sight re-broadcasting infrastructure.

3 – Secure

Voice and data remain encrypted ‘end to end’ utilising BOWMAN’s own crypto to allow secure voice and data transmissions using the already battle-proven SlingShot system.

4 – Flexible

Enabling BOWMAN with the robust Slingshot system also means that troops do not need to carry both BOWMAN radios (for line-of-sight) and UHF TacSat radios (for strategic rear link). This can now be carried out using the same radio.

5 – Agile

The omni-directional antennas utilised with SlingShot provide manpack, land, sea and air platforms deliver real-time Comms on the Move rather than Comms on the Pause, as experienced with traditional UHF TacSat.
